The Tavor X95 XB16

The new Tavor X95 XB16 is the latest in Bullpup technology from IWI US. It is available in 9mm as well as .300 Blackout and 9mm conversion kits, and is available in Black, FDE (XFD16), and OD Green (XG16).

When the Israeli firearms manufacturer first designed the original Tavor TAR-1 in the mid 1990s, they did so to meet the weaponry needs for close quarters combat situations. Soldiers needed something that they can use while maneuvering and clearing houses and buildings in urban environments, but yet had to be just as reliable (if not more) than the AR or AK platforms. Not only did the Tavor TAR-21 present a shorter profile than “traditional” ARs, it also featured an ambidextrous, modular platform. It didn’t matter if the shooters were left handed or right handed. The Tavor could be configured to fit the exact needs of each individual shooter. Today, the Tavor platform is one of the most predominate weapon systems used by today’s Elite Special Forces Units.

Once the Tavor was allowed to be released to the civilian market, they began shipping them over to the US with the designation of “SAR.” Since then, a following of bullpup shooters has evolved that has turned the weekend warrior’s world upside down.

Now, the next evolution of bullpup designs has hit the market with more advanced features and design changes that many shooters have been begging for… and IWI has obviously listened.

New Features on the X95 XB16

  • The new X95 now features an “M16” style Mag Release Button instead of the old SAR switch which made magazine changes unacceptably more difficult and time consuming.
  • Shooters now have the ability to change out their pistol grip according to their personal preference simply by unscrewing the screw on the bottom of the pistol grip
  • Relocation of the charging handle that is closer to the shooters center of mass
  • Lower profile bolt release and enhanced rear receiver
  • A forearm tactical rail system to accommodate accessories such as a flashlight
  • And finally, a lighter trigger system (5-6 lbs.)

The new Magazine Release Button and forward rail design are by far my two favorite modifications on this new model. No more awkward feelings trying to nail that rear magazine switch will manipulating the firearm during maneuvers or while conducting tactical reloads. Yes, once you got the hang of the old system you were able to get pretty good at it, but with this new AR style magazine button, its 100x easier. And the forward rail system that comes covered from the factory with the standard plastic forehand guards (seen in the photos above) are absolutely perfect for mounting a flashlight for home defense purposes, or even a forward grip.

Overall, I would say that the Bullpup platform has evolved into an exceptional platform with the new Tavor X95 XB16, especially for close quarter combat applications. If you haven’t gotten the chance to try one yet, do so and it will open your mind to a whole new world of shooting.

AR-15 New Releases Self Defense Smith and Wesson Sport Rifles

M&P15 Sport II

Sport II

M&P15 Sport II

The designers over at Smith & Wesson heard the feedback from their loyal consumers, and they have finally answered the call. The Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport II, replacing the previous M&P15 Sport now comes with a Forward Assist and a dust cover!

Sport II

That being said, I will let you in on a little secret for those of you who still have and plan on keeping your Ol’ Sport I. Out of my two Combat Tours to Afghanistan, even with all the fine dry dirt that absolutely consumed the environment (we called it “moondust”) I never once used my forward assist. And the dust cover, it only stayed closed when we were Oscar-Mike or inside the wire, the rest of the time it was wide open and spitting out brass. So if you keep your gun clean and rack it properly, you’re gonna be just fine.

As for the Sport II, it is now a fully functional AR just like its VTAC and MOE big brothers. The upper receiver that contains the newly added features also houses a Chromed Firing Pin, Mil-Spec bolt assembly, and flat-top picatinny rail system with Magpul folding MBUS Rear Sight that comes included.

Sport II

Mounted to the rear is a 6-position Collapsible Stock (where legal! Those of you in states with special restrictions there are Sport II models just for you!), and to the front, of course, is the 16” 4140 Steel Barrel with 6 lands and grooves and 1:9 twist. Covering the Gas Operating Semi-Automatic operating system is a High-Temp Polymer Handguard, giving it that Classic AR look.

Sport II

The lower receiver has a forged integral Trigger Guard, high temp polymer handguard, and of course comes standard (were legal) with a 30 round Magpul PMAG. To finish it off, the upper and lower receiver are coated in a Corrosion Resistant Black Armornite finish. Not too bad for an economically priced entry-level AR!

What ARE the main differences between the M&P15 Sport II and other high-end models like the VTAC and MOE?

Mainly, it is the type of metals that are used and the accessories that come included with it. While the M&P15 Sport II comes with a 4150 Steel barrel, the VTAC and MOE  both come standard with a 4150 CMV (Chrome-moly Vanadium) Barrel. This Vanadium Steel alloy is considerably stronger and more durable than regular steel which increases accuracy and rifling durability substantially, especially over time. To put it in perspective, Vanadium is a predominant element in alloys that are used to make high integrity parts like gears and crankshafts, and even high-speed drill bits and other manufacturing tools. This is because “regular” steel wares out too fast in relative time.  The other key element that the higher end models include is 5R rifling and in some cases, chrome-lined barrels, which both provide better internal ballistics for competition shooting and accuracy.  Add this on top of the accessories that are included with the higher end models, and you can see where the price differences are.

Sport II

But like most of us out there (including me), you want to build your own rifle, or,  you’re not about to just drop 2 grand on a gun all at once. That’s why the Smith & Wesson M&P Sport II is such a great product. It gives you the ability to purchase an AR at a great price, and then over time, add on all the goodies you want and actually build your own rifle at your own pace, custom to you. Either way, whether you are an avid shooter, or simply just getting into the sport, you will find that the Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport II is above par among entry level ARs.

The CORE15 Scout – A Great Entry Level AR-15

CORE15 Scout

The CORE15 Scout

The CORE15 Scout is a great AR-15 Sport Rifle for hunting or home defense. One of the most popular products to dramatically increase in demand over the past year are entry level AR’s that are economically priced to fit practically any budget. So much so that companies are now producing less advanced rifles in order to lower costs for consumer budgets, such as the Smith and Wesson M&P15 Sport II, Ruger’s AR-556, and Mossberg’s MMR – the CORE15 Scout is no exception.

Like most AR-15’s, the CORE15 Scout weighs about 6 lbs. with an empty magazine. It comes standard with a 16” 1:9 twist barrel that’s chambered in .223/5.56 NATO. The Upper and Lower Receiver are both Mil-Spec and forged out of 7075-T6 Aluminum Alloy and coated with Type III Class II Hardcoat Anodized Finish. The M16 Chrome-Lined Bolt Carrier group is also Mil-Spec as well is the Buffer Tube Assembly.

CORE15 Scout

The Barrel is finished with the traditional A-2 Flash Hider and is mounted with a forged A Frame Front Sight Base. Covering the 304 Grade Stainless Steel Gas Tube is a set of M4 style polymer molded hand guards that are also resilient to heat. For the pistol grip, CORE opted for the traditional A-2 but did however include their own Oversized Trigger Guard which is great for shooters who prefer shooting with gloves. To finish the package off, CORE includes a Six-Position Retractable Buttstock and 30 round Mission First Tactical Magazine (where legal).

CORE15 Scout

The two best things that the CORE15 Scout offers is that it is all 100% Mil-Spec, and, its picatinny flat-top rail design makes it “optics-ready.” This is outstanding for those who want to purchase an AR-15 rifle and wish to upgrade it as time goes on, because you can virtually upgrade anything you want to it. What is so great about these new entry level AR-15’s, is that you can completely customize them without breaking the bank. Visit CORE’s Website for a more detailed list of specifications.
